We asked some of our team members to tell us about bosses who have inspired them and the qualities they believe good bosses share. For Ilse Coetzee (Institute Coordinator), these two quotes sum up what she feels a good boss symbolises:

“We are more powerful when we empower each other” (Author Unknown)

and

“Knowledge will give you power, but character will give you respect.” (Bruce Lee)

Shreen van Schoor (Registrar) says: “The best bosses I have had were people who knew how to say “thank you” and recognised the work done by each staff member, no matter how small or big the task was. They were empathetic and authentic in their approach when speaking. They accepted the staff quirks as much as they accepted the strengths.”

She also shares this from a personal perspective: “The best bosses I have ever had, honestly had my back and I knew it. We all knew that we were stronger as a whole than we were as individuals and nobody displayed hierarchy – we felt equal too. They listened, they responded, and they acted. They gave us opportunities and allowed us space to learn.”

Geraldine Louw (Receptionist) says: “Care, is what comes to my mind when I think about what it takes to be a good boss; showing tough love where necessary and showing gratitude.”

Michelle Burger (Editor) quotes Brian Tracy who said: “Leadership is the ability to get extraordinary achievement from ordinary people.” She adds: “It takes a special skill to extract the best from others. Good leaders bring out the best in their people.”

Magda Dickens (Brand and Communications Assistant) shares: “To me, a great boss is someone who sets a great example for others and does what it takes to get the job done.”

Zakie January (Financial Manager) describes the attributes of a boss who is a good leader as follows: “Competence, Commitment and Character – three equal and essential traits – none more important than the other. Leadership is both an art and a science and requires practice to hone. Mastering the three Cs will provide a strong foundation upon which to grow. A great leader has all three these qualities!”
