LEADERSHIP ESSENTIALS

Leaders today seem to have little time to focus on the right things. Let alone to pause for long enough on the right things. I have summarised the TowerStone Leadership Philosophy above into these easy to remember points. Should you find yourself challenged, ask yourself the following questions:

Direction and Purpose: Have I made effort today to set direction and does it have purpose?  It’s is incumbent on every leader to set direction and to ensure we have purpose. This ensures everyone is always aware of where we are going and more importantly why. This is a good way to start.

Lead by Example: Cliché, I hear you say? Indeed. Ask yourself the following: Am I living the values expected of me from my organisation? I will no doubt be on the mark or know by how far I am off the mark. Have a look in the mirror from time to time and reflect.

Inspire Followers: Possibly the most difficult attribute. How am I to inspire others if I am not inspired? When is the last time you felt inspired? Not excited, or happy or elated. Just inspired? This word has been taken for granted. To be truly inspired, means to find that one thing that jolts you into action. Inspiration creates energy and movement. We have to touch minds, hands and heart. Imagine if we could inspire that. What will we enjoy?

Communication: At its core, we are talking about two intangibles: Consistency and Constantly. Consistently means never failing, always to be expected. Yet this can be once a year for 10 years. Not effective. Constantly means all the time. Now let’s marry the two. Communication infers both of these. We need to be communicating consistently and constantly. As a good colleague of mine once said “When you are done communicating, communicate some more!”

Lead All the Time: Leadership is not a light switch. Leadership is a purpose, almost a calling. Leadership must be intentional.  Great leaders are the kinds of individuals who are consistent in who they are and how they show up. There are very few examples of great leaders who have not failed this last point. Good or bad, they are consciously leading all the time.

When we reach a point where each of these philosophies become habit, we start to understanding the value of true meaning of leadership and the impact it has on the sustainability of the business.
